Focal Point in Colombia - Alexander von Humboldt Institute
The Alexander von Humboldt Research Institute for Biological Resources is the National Biodiversity Institute of Colombia. It was created by Law 99 of 1993, as a non-profit civil corporation, of public character, linked to the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, but subject to the rules of private law, with administrative autonomy, legal personality and independent assets.
The Institute boasts a remarkable staff of 350 people, who are responsible for conducting basic and applied research on the national flora and fauna and for compiling and shaping the scientific inventory of biodiversity throughout the national territory. In addition, it provides technical advice and technological transfers to national, territorial, and international entities in charge of managing the environment and renewable natural resources.
Throughout its 26 years of existence, the Alexander von Humboldt Institute has become a world-class biodiversity institute that plays a leading role at the science-policy-society interface, mobilizing data, information, knowledge and narratives that position and connect biodiversity and its diverse contributions in the transition to a nature-based society and economy at the center of our sustainable development.
