Convention on Biological Diversity

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), adopted at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, is one of the key agreements on a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development. The Convention has 193 Parties and three main goals:

  1. the conservation of biological diversity,
  2. the sustainable use of its components, and
  3. the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources.

Colombia became a Party to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) through Law 165 of 1994. The Convention entered into force for Colombia on February 26, 1995. Colombia is also a Party to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, better known as the Cartagena Protocol. The objective of this protocol is to contribute to ensuring an adequate level of protection in the field of the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and human health, focusing on transboundary movements.

Additionally, in March 2019 Colombia completed its ratification process of the Nagoya - Kuala Lumpur Protocol on Liability and Redress Supplementary to the Cartagena Protocol, through Law 1926 of July 24, 2018.
