Savannas and rocky outcrops
Savanna and rocky outcrop ecosystems in Colombia are characterized by a seasonal climate with rainfall and natural fires, resulting in vegetation with low primary productivity, mainly grasses interspersed with scrub and scattered trees. These areas are relatively young in geological terms and show low levels of endemism in their flora.
These ecosystems contribute significantly to food production and recreational activities for the Colombian population. Savannas and rocky outcrops harbor vegetation adapted to slopes and cliffs, with a high level of endemism. Approximately 3% of the national territory is composed of rocky outcrops, while savannas and rocky outcrops combined cover 8.3% of Colombia's land area, with only 1% being transformed.
