Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

Ipbes
  • The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an autonomous intergovernmental body established by member states in 2012. It provides policy makers with objective scientific assessments on the state of knowledge related to global biodiversity, ecosystems and the benefits they provide to people, as well as tools and methods to protect and sustainably use these essential natural resources. Our mission is to strengthen, through science, the knowledge base for improving policies aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development. In a way, IPBES does for biodiversity what the IPCC does for climate change.

The importance of IPBES lies in its ability to integrate knowledge from diverse disciplines and communities, providing policy-relevant information and accelerating its implementation at governmental, private and civilian levels.

The work of IPBES is grouped into four complementary areas:

  1. Assessments: Conducts thematic, methodological, regional and global level assessments on biodiversity and ecosystem services.
  2. Policy support: Identifies and facilitates the use of policy-relevant tools and methodologies, and promotes their development.
  3. Capacity and knowledge strengthening: Meets the priority capacity, knowledge and data needs of its members, experts and stakeholders.
  4. Communication and outreach: Ensures broad reach and impact of your work.
