OTCA Assessment

Fast Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in the Amazon Region

  • The Fast Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in the Amazon Region is a technical study conducted by a group of experts from the Region on the state of biodiversity and ecosystem services, their drivers of loss and opportunities for the good living and sustainable development of the population of the Amazon countries. Its purpose is to provide scientific and technical information to decision-makers to reverse the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services and convert this wealth into a potential for sustainable development in the region.

  • The assessment is coordinated by the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), with technical and scientific support from the Alexander von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute and financial support from GIZ.
This study will have a holistic approach and will encompass several perspectives, including biophysical, economic and cultural, and will be oriented to support the implementation of the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity and other socio-environmental processes led by United Nations agencies, such as the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Environment Program, or the World Food Program. The assessment will also take into account the knowledge, roles and participation of indigenous peoples and local communities in the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services, and will analyze the role of institutions in the access, control, allocation, distribution of nature's components and their contributions to people. It will also be based on and take into account previous and ongoing studies by governments, research institutes, regional technical cooperation networks, non-governmental organizations and academia.
