IPBES National Committee

EsmeralderoThe IPBES National Committee, is a deliberative body created as a national biodiversity platform, in accordance with the IPBES recommendation, as a point of articulation between 14 public sector entities, the academic sector and the private sector to support the dissemination and assimilation of IPBES work, which has a global scope, to the different national contexts. However, this work is not limited to IPBES processes, as they are also encouraged to be used for the dissemination and utilization of findings from national evaluations such as the NEA.

One of the main functions of the Committee is to review IPBES evaluations and formulate recommendations aimed at improving their technical quality and, if necessary, promoting the usefulness and applicability of their findings in the country. The Committee has also served to prepare the country positions for the IPBES Plenary Sessions, consolidating the position of different representatives from the public and private sectors. It also served as a key scenario for the dissemination of the results of the National Ecosystem Assessment (NEA). However, in order to strengthen the Committee's scope, it is important to broaden its membership to include, among others, public and governmental entities other than the environmental sector, the private-business sector, indigenous peoples and local communities, and other civil society entities.
