Dry forest, scrubland and deserts
The dry forest, notable for its severe water deficit, presents an environmental delimitation subject to debate. Although it originally occupied 7% of Colombian territory, it has been extensively transformed, reaching a fragmentation level of 97%. These forests harbor significant diversity, with 2,569 identified plant species, many of which are endemic due to environmental variability. Despite their contribution to carbon sequestration, gaps remain in the understanding of their ecological dynamics and their value in providing ecosystem services.
The more arid and desert regions of Colombia, although representing 2-3% of the country, have received comparatively less research attention. Both tropical dry forests and deserts are classified as Critically Endangered ecosystems in Colombia.
