The four objectives that the Colombia Government will promote during COP16
12 September 2019
According to statements from the Minister of Environment and Development, these are the main objectives pursued with this event:
- The creation of a “fund to distribute the benefits of using genetic resources stored in digital databases. To explain a bit further, there are genetic resources segmented in biodiversity DNA, stored in databases that the industry uses to develop scientific research products, create innovations in the pharmaceutical industry, the cosmetics industry, and the food industry.”
- Approval of the work plan for Indigenous peoples and local communities to empower them financially and politically.
- Agreement on financing from various sources to protect biodiversity. “A financing agreement that includes different sources, such as debt-for-nature swaps and climate action.”
- Fulfillment of the 23 goals to protect biodiversity by 2030, agreed upon at COP15. “Countries must present their plans at this COP, and we need to build the capacity for implementation. Therefore, there will be an evaluation of our progress on these goals and a roadmap for achieving them under the convention.”
